SALVATION ARMY SEARCH FOR YOUNG HEROES CONTINUES
$5,000 Scholarship Application Deadline: March 8, 2010
The Salvation Army continues to seek nominations for the 2010 D.J.’s Hero Scholarship Awards. Seven Nebraska youths, ages 17-19, will be chosen to receive the award, named after D.J. Sokol, for commitment to others and to their community.
Nominations must be postmarked by March 8, 2010 to be eligible for entry. Nomination forms are available online at www.GiveSalvationArmy.org. Forms may also be obtained by contacting Patti Cameli at 402-898-5906 or through Nebraska high school academic counselors.
Honorees receive a $5,000 scholarship toward their selected college or university. D.J.’s Heroes will be recognized at the D.J.’s Hero Awards Luncheon on May 3, 2010 at Qwest Center Omaha. Featured speaker will be two time NFL MVP Kurt Warner, former quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals.
Criteria for selecting honorees include: Nebraska residency Commitment to others and the community Courage to act independently Enthusiasm for life Overcoming adversity Unique achievements that set them apart from others
D.J. Sokol, son of David & Peggy Sokol of Omaha, lost his courageous battle with cancer at the age of 18. Through the D.J.'s Hero Award, his memory lives on through the recipients who share his qualities of dedication to faith, selfless acts for others, volunteerism and commitment to the community.
Proceeds from the luncheon benefit Salvation Army programs for children and families.
